Learning English Around The World

EXPLORE THE WORLD IN SAINT BENOÎT
Exciting ! Rewarding ! Memorable !

Spending the break and summer holiday abroad is one of the many beneficial experiences for Saint Benoît students. For many years, we have all been aware of the fact that English skills are essential.

By going abroad, students have the opportunity to spend time in a foreign country and take in the allure and culture of a new land. Studying foreign languages abroad can help our students transform their language skills from merely getting by in a foreign language to achieving fluency, because they are fully immersed in the language. Studying a foreign language abroad both accelerates their learning and broadens their perspective.

▪ Why should children spend their break or summer holiday abroad ?

1. Experience a new culture

When our students are abroad, they participate in the day-to-day life of a new locale, gaining a first hand understanding and new appreciation of another culture. This gives them the opportunity to absorb nuances in speech that might be difficult to relay in a textbook. Being in a new place by themselves can be overwhelming at times, and it tests their ability to adapt to diverse situations while being able to problems solve.

2. Improve their Second Language skills

Being surrounded by native speakers affords them the chance to immerse themselves completely in the language, which can expedite their retention and fluency. Furthermore, if they travel to a country in which the primary language is the one they have studied in school, they can add to their vocabulary colloquial words and phrases that may not appear in textbooks.

3. Learn how to communicate across cultures

In today’s increasingly global society, it’s important to possess the skills needed to communicate across cultures, and this means understanding more than just a different language.
By interacting with locals, our students can develop an appreciation for the culture and its differences.

4. Make friends from around the world

One of the biggest benefits of spending time abroad is it gives the opportunity to make new lifelong friends from different backgrounds. It gives our students the opportunity to really get to know and create lasting relationships with new friends.

5. The improvement of the English language for world citizenship

Model United Nations (MUN) is a simulation of the United Nations whose mission is to train students for international debates and to improve communication skills. There is a high rate of participation all over the world.

▪ Final word…

Students will learn how their home country fits into world, and through the eyes of a different culture they can more precisely reflect upon their own culture. While learning another country’s traditions, they will understand the significance of keeping their own traditions alive while sharing them with others. Living with a host family, meeting new international friends and studying at a foreign school is one of the best ways for your child to understand today’s social, political and economic issues.
